IDW to adapt FEARnet’s “30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust” web series in a limited edition comic

FEARnet, the world’s premiere horror and thriller website and on-demand service, and IDW Publishing, the publishers of the acclaimed, best-selling 30 Days of Night graphic novels, have teamed up to create a 16-page, limited-edition comic book adaptation of FEARnet’s upcoming web series 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust. The special, limited edition collectible comic book will be distributed exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con on July 26th at FEARnet’s booth #4313. Only 10 thousand issues are being created for distribution.

The comic book provides an entry into FEARnet’s all-new 30 Days of Night inspired web series - 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust — that will debut July 17th on FEARnet.com. Produced for FEARnet by Ghost House Pictures, the joint-venture between Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Mandate Pictures, 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust will once again unleash the terror of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith’s ground-breaking 30 Days of Night graphic novels. The new six episode web series will be bolstered by the star power of one of today’s hottest femme fatales: the stunning Shawnee Smith of the blockbuster horror franchise Saw as well as The Island, Armageddon and Leaving Las Vegas. The series will also feature appearances by horror cult favorites Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead) and Ted Raimi (Evil Dead Series).

Last fall, FEARnet launched its first 30 Days of Night web series — 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails — timed to Sony Pictures/Ghost House Pictures 30 Days of Night feature film. The series became an instant hit, generating more than 5 million views.

Dust to Dust is a direct sequel to Blood Trails and will take viewers even deeper into the terrifying vampire-infested world. The Dust to Dust series will be carried on FEARnet.com as well as the FEARnet On Demand network, available on participating digital cable systems.

Dust to Dust continues the New Orleans storyline from Blood Trails where fans first met George, an ex-junkie who, while trying to expose the vampires, got captured by the authorities and blamed for the trail of bodies. Our new series begins as Detective Nick Maguire learns that his sister Sara, a nurse at the local penitentiary, disappeared during a mysterious prison break in which George escaped. Nick ignores the wishes of his former partner, Gina, and begins to search for Sara himself. While scouring the gritty streets of New Orleans, Nick finds George and learns that there was more to the prison break than anyone thought, and that the wounds inflicted upon Sara may be changing her into a blood-thirsty vampire. Now, in order to save his sister, Nick will have to learn to trust George, and become a believer in the evil that stalks his streets at night.

The 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust comic book was written by IDW writer-editor Tom Waltz, and based on the original screenplay by Ed Fowler. Artist Justin Randall, who previously worked with legendary 30 Days of Night creator Steve Niles on 30 Days of Night: Eben & Stella, provided illustration. Steve Niles himself served as producer (and creative consultant) along with 30 Days of Night co-creator Ben Templesmith. Aside from producing, Mr. Templesmith provided art direction and designed and illustrated the cover for the book. The book was edited by FEARnet’s Joseph McCabe and IDW’s publisher and editor-in-chief Chris Ryall and Eisner Award winning Robbie Robbins provided letters.

CBR reviews the Year in Niles

Comic Book Resources recently went over the last year of Steve Niles projects with Steve himself, looking at the “30 Days of Night” movie experience, Steve’s various comic book projects and what 2008 holds in store for him and his fans.

Niles’s most visible project of 2007 was the feature film adaptation of his and Ben Templesmith’s “30 Days of Night,” which brought the creator attention beyond the comics-reading audience. “A couple years ago I set up at a Fangoria con with IDW Publishing and we maybe sold one copy of the ‘Dawn of the Dead’ comic I did,” Steve Niles told CBR News. “The last time I went to a Fango show, I had lines of people buying, reading, and getting comics signed, so I think we do have a spill-over [from the ’30 Days of Night Movie’] and are getting new readers. To me, that’s the most important thing we need to accomplish as an industry. If we keep selling to the same 100 thousand readers, eventually they move on and we need another generation to come in. So far, knock wood, I seem to be crossing over thanks to the film.”

Horror Yearbook interviews Steve for “5 Days of Steve Niles”

Horror Yearbook is running a “5 Days of Steve Niles” feature in celebration of the release of “30 Days” on DVD, and day one kicked things off with a short interview with the man himself.

HORROR YEARBOOK: You have the 30 Days of Night screenplay credit, the upcoming Dead, She Said comic book for IDW, and now a book showcasing your favorite character in Criminal Macabre: The Complete Cal McDonald Stories. Do you prefer a certain format over another?

STEVE NILES: I prefer doing all three actually because each offers something the other doesn’t, or at least it’s easier to say do a chase scene in a movie, or glimpse inside someone’s thought process in a novel or a combination of the two in a comic. I really do enjoy all three. If I had to pick one I’d go with prose because it’s the only thing I do that is completely solo. As much as I love comics I have to be in synch with an artist to pull it off and with movies everybody gets to fuck with it so…

HORROR YEARBOOK: Cal McDonald has been around for a while now. What intrigues you to continue writing about this guy?

STEVE NILES: I loved flawed characters and Cal is as flawed as you can get without becoming a villain. I’m able to say things with Cal that just don’t come out in other characters. There’s something very honest about that junkie asshole and I just love seeing the world through his cynical eyes.

“30 Days of Night” Hits Malaysia

“30 Days of Night” is spreading across the globe, and asian audiences are excited about it’s opening in their part of the world. The Malaysian newspaper, TheStar, has an article on the horror flick on their website right now.

“Horror movies over the last five years haven’t been beautiful or very entertaining or all that scary. They’ve been appalling. I think 30 DON is a return to the classic horror movie,” said Niles.

“We had an idea of the classic horror movie as opposed to a slasher movie. There is a degree of violence but it is all character-based in terms of why it happens,” Slade concurred.

iF: What is the message of this film?

NILES: In this one, the message is more about enjoyment. I want people to enjoy this movie like we used to enjoy old classic horror movie. I want you to get out of the theater with your heart pounding and all exited. I don’t want to disgust you like some of these terrible horror-torture movies like the SAW and HOSTEL pictures. I hate all of these horror/porn/torture movies, these are not horror movies to me. This one, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT is how horror movies should be, fun and entertaining.

C2F: Everyone really seemed committed to the vision that you and Ben put forward in the book.

Niles: That’s David Slade and Sam Raimi. If you read any interview with either of them that’s like their mantra, it’s gotta be like the graphic novel. And each for their own purposes. It’s very funny. David Slade really liked the darkness of it all and wanted to see just how nihilistic and dark he could make this movie. Raimi really fixated on the love story and the characters. And between the two of them they managed to preserve the entire thing. It’s really amazing. And I can just tell you from previous experience, man, Ben and I are lucky as hell

CBR’s in-depth interview with Steve Niles

In perhaps the most candid and career encompassing interview he’s ever had, Steve sat down and talked comics, movies and life with Comic Book Resources.

Let’s transport you back to the moment when “30 Days of Night” became an underground sensation. With the release of the TPB, it meant you had arrived because that thing was a huge seller for IDW. That said, what did this arrival mean to your comics career? Following “30 Days of Night” you were still mostly doing creator-owned work.

Well, I had been writing since I was around 13 years old. I had a huge back log of work, including two novels in a drawer, pitches, scripts, ideas, so once somebody gave me half a chance I just dove in. I couldn’t wait. I went a little nuts after “30 Days of Night” hit and up until about five minutes ago I would say yes to everything I was offered, on top of doing all the creator-owned stuff. I kind of lucked out. Some of it worked, some of it did not. But I still love working like that. To me, doing the movie and selling the movie and if the movie’s a success hopefully means it’ll be possible for me to do more work and, honestly, comics is where I want my focus to be.

Alright, so now everybody in Hollywood loves you and the bidding process on the rights begin. At what point did the studios actually get interested?

When the ad in Previews hit. That was so strange. We got so psyched out because everyone was freaking out about the concept and Ted would call me to say, “Retailers are freaking out! They think this is a great concept and would make a great movie.” Then the orders came in and they were shit ! We got like 4,000 orders. Everyone liked the idea, but not enough to buy the book. Then all the hype started and then the orders started to go up. It was the weirdest thing.

When you were pitching the studios, a bidding war broke out, did it not?

Yeah. I believe it boiled down to DreamWorks, MGM and Columbia with Sam Raimi attached. Hearing Sam Raimi’s name for me was all it took.

I was being told amounts and offers and it was crazy. It was pretty much, “We’ll give you a million dollars and a free car!!!!” But when I heard Sam Raimi, my brain basically shut off. I said, “I don’t even know what amount or which studio, just go with Raimi.” Form that point forward, I stepped away from the negotiations and just said, “Let me know how much I’m getting paid.” Like, can I substitute ramen for canned soup finally? [laughs]

Sam Raimi answered a load of questions for reporters at a recent press conference arranged to promote his fledgling Ghost House Pictures production company and it’s flagship movie, “30 Days of Night”.

What interested you about the 30 Days of Night story?

“It seemed like it should’ve been thought of before because it’s so obviously great, that you go up to a place like Barrow, Alaska, where night falls for 30 days and you’ve got to survive that time period with vampires at your throat.

Nevertheless, I’d never heard of it before. It was original. Maybe that’s how great ideas are. They just seem like someone should’ve thought of them before, but I had never heard anything like it. So I was struck by the originality of it, what a great concept it was, the great visuals, but…the thing that really connected me to it were the two characters at the center – Eben and Stella – and their love story.
At Ghost House, we always want to find something that’s new. Recently we’ve been looking in the Far East and their filmmakers and the newer visions that they can bring to films. This was a homegrown picture though, which was very exciting, a homegrown idea. The thing that connected me to it more than all those concepts and cool ideas were those characters that Steve Niles wrote about. I really liked the fact that they were having problems, that they loved each other, that they were real human beings and that it was a love story at its heart. I loved the bookends of how it began with the sunset and ended with the sunrise with the two of them and the journey that they had taken throughout the course of this one long night. Those were the things that I thought made it really new, the attention to the detail of character.”
