Steve Niles goes International with Foreign Editions of “30 Days of Night” and More!

January 6th, 2006 by Administrator

If you’re reading this you’re obviously quite familiar with the work of Steve Niles. You’re also most likely from either the United States, England, Canada or Australia (if our traffic stats are to be trusted). But, Steve’s fans aren’t limited to just those English speaking countries. Steve’s got fans all over the world and to prove it to ya, we’ve been assembling copies of the many foreign editions of Steve’s work that have been published in countries like Portugal, Italy, France, Poland and others. And we’ve got scans for you set-up in our image gallery.

It’s quite a trip seeing Steve’s stories like “30 Days of Night” presented in Polish or Japanese. What’s fascinating is how good some of the translations are. While we can’t speak to the actual content of the dialogue, the lettering in some of these editions quite nicely emulates the original lettering, but naturally in the home country’s language. Of the many editions we’ve seen, easily the finest reproductions are offered from Japan.

The Japanese collections are a wonder of design and style. All of them include a full slip-cover, along with a quarter page slip cover that gives additional details about what can be found inside the collections. Each copy of the Japanese “30 Days of Night” contains a wealth of supplemental material designed specially for the Japanese edition. There are loads of sketches and character studies, the translated “Journal of William Kitka,” an extensive history of vampires, a section of notes from the translator, a cover gallery and much more. Well, at least we think it has all that stuff … no one here at SteveNiles.com Global Amalgamated Industries actually speaks Japanese, but we’re making what we think are educated guesses. Regardless, the design of these extra features is nice to look at.

The Japanese collection of “30 Days of Night: Return to Barrow” contains a map of the United States with descriptions of each location the book references, once again has notes from the translator and even includes a reprint of all the materials from the “Horrorcide” collection as a nice bonus. The Japanese “Dark Days” collection gets the same treatment as “Return To Barrow,” without the “Horrocide” addition, naturally. The designers of these Japanese editions really should be lauded for their efforts. Nicely done.

We hope you enjoy this look at the foreign editions of Steve’s work. If you should find yourself globetrotting and spot one of these foreign editions, give them a look. And if it’s one we don’t have in our gallery, drop us a line so that we can include it.
